Ankle sprains are a common injury, particularly among athletes, that occur when the foot is turned or twisted in an unnatural way, resulting in damage to one or more of the ligaments that support the ankle joint. The most common cause is internal rotation of the foot, but sprains can also be caused by external rotation (eversion). The ligaments most commonly affected are the anterior talofibular (ATFL), calcaneal fibular (CFL), and posterior talofibular (PTFL) in inversion injuries, and the deltoid ligament in eversion injuries.
Symptoms of an ankle sprain include immediate swelling and intense pain, as well as limited movement and instability of the ankle in more severe cases. To diagnose an ankle sprain, a doctor may perform an X-ray to rule out the presence of fractures, and an ultrasound or MRI may be used to evaluate the extent of ligament damage.
Ankle Sprain Pain Treatment
Rehabilitation following an ankle sprain is crucial for restoring joint stability and dynamic function. Treatment may include manual therapy, exercises to regain range of motion and strength, and the use of a brace or support to protect the ankle while it heals. A maintenance program may also be recommended to prevent the problem from recurring, usually carried out at home or at the gym.
